Terms and Conditions

The Mainlander Train Tour is organised by Pounamu Tourism Group Limited (PTG). PTG is a New Zealand owned and registered company. All transactions are completed in New Zealand dollars.

PTG accept no responsibility for variations to any arrival or departure. However, every attempt will be made to keep passengers fully informed of any alterations to the schedule.

The Mainlander Train Tour Ticket cancellation policy

Ticket cancellation policy:

  • 7+ days notice will be 100% refunded;
  • 48+ hours notice will be 50% refunded;
  • Less than 48 hours – no refund.
  • In the event that Pounamu Tourism Group cancels the tour, 100% refund will apply.
  • If the train is operating for a cruise ship, and the cruise ship cannot enter port and cancels its visit, then you will be refunded in full.

The Mainlander Train “Rail & Stay” Package cancellation policy

Tour cancellation policy:

  • 30+ days notice will be 100% refunded;
  • Less than 30 days – no refund.
  • In the event that Pounamu Tourism Group cancels the tour, 100% refund will apply.

Mainlander “Southern Rail & Coach Tour” cancellation policy

In the event the passenger cancels a tour, the following fees apply prior to departure:

  • More than 6 months prior to tour departure, a full refund will apply, no cancellation fee;
  • 60 days or more prior to departure, 20% of the tour package price;
  • Between 30 and 59 days prior to departure, 50% of the tour package price;
  • Less than 30 days prior to departure, 100% of the tour package price.
  • If Pounamu Tourism Group cancels the tour, a 100% refund applies.

Please note: No refunds for unused portions of the itinerary once the tour has commenced. No refunds for breakdowns or delays after joining the train.

Passengers must arrive within a reasonable time before departure. Train departure will not be delayed for late passengers.

PTG does not guarantee specific seats or carriage areas. PTG reserves the right to substitute motive power or rolling stock for operational needs.

Passenger requirements

Passengers must:

  • Ride only in designated areas.
  • Wear suitable footwear. Important: Sandals or non-enclosed shoes are not permitted on viewing balconies.
  • Act in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Observe all instructions from PTG staff.
  • Follow all signs and obey notices.

Passengers may not:

  • Smoke or vape on board.
  • Consume alcohol other than what is sold on the train.
  • Use emergency equipment/exits except in an emergency.
  • Behave in a disruptive manner.
  • Cause damage to PTG or partner property.

PTG may refuse carriage if a passenger poses a risk (for example if intoxicated, under the influence of drugs, or carrying a weapon). All passengers must comply with notices or instructions regarding conduct for safety reasons.

Liability

Passengers travel at their own risk. Neither PTG nor any of its partners accept responsibility for any loss, damage, cost or injury to passengers or their belongings beyond what is required by applicable New Zealand law.

PTG is not liable for:

  • Any consequences arising from variations or delays to the arrival or departure times of any service.
  • Any loss or damage resulting from the cancellation of, or variations to, the arrival or departure times of any service.
  • Damage to passenger property, personal injury, illness, or death, except to the extent that liability cannot be excluded by law.

PTG is not liable for any loss, damage, or delay caused by events beyond its reasonable control, including acts of God, unavoidable accidents, riots, civil commotion, strikes, lockouts, stoppages, or restraints of labour, whether partial or general.
