The Mainlander runs across a simple weekend format, giving you the flexibility to travel south,
enjoy the Saturday journey, and return north on Monday.
Friday – Southbound
Christchurch / Addington → Rolleston → Timaru → Oamaru → Dunedin
Saturday – Southern day journey
Dunedin → Gore → Invercargill → Gore → Dunedin
Monday – Northbound
Dunedin → Oamaru → Timaru → Rolleston → Christchurch / Addington

Your fare includes rail travel on The Mainlander for the selected route and departure date booked at the time of purchase.
ONBOARD EXPERIENCE
Enjoy access to onboard facilities, friendly onboard hosts, and a comfortable journey through some of the South Island’s most memorable landscapes.
EXCLUSIONS
Accommodation is not included in the ticket-only fare. Meals and beverages are not included unless purchased onboard. Transfers, sightseeing add-ons, and any additional travel arrangements are also not included unless otherwise stated.

Weekend Train Journeys are available across selected stations including Christchurch, Rolleston, Ashburton, Timaru, Oamaru, Dunedin, Gore and Invercargill. When booking, simply choose your departure and arrival points.
Do I have to book a return trip?
No. You can choose either a one-way or return fare, depending on how you would like to travel.
Is accommodation included in this option?
No. This page is for rail-only fares. If you are looking for a more packaged southern getaway, Train + Accommodation options are available separately.
