The Mainlander Summer Series is here, with selected train-only journeys available from October to December 2026. Travel south by rail through some of the South Island’s most memorable landscapes, from Canterbury through Otago and into the deep south. Whether you are travelling for a shorter sector, heading to Dunedin for the weekend, or continuing further south to Gore and Invercargill, The Mainlander offers a comfortable and scenic way to move between destinations. The last Mainlander release sold out, and summer journeys are expected to be popular. Early booking is recommended.

The Mainlander runs across a simple long-weekend format, giving you the flexibility to travel south, enjoy the southern journey, and return north on Monday.

  • Friday – Southbound

    Travel south from Christchurch through Rolleston, Ashburton, Timaru and Oamaru before arriving in Dunedin.

  • Sunday – Southern day journey

    Travel from Dunedin through Gore to Invercargill, then return to Dunedin later the same day.

Your fare includes rail travel on The Mainlander for the selected route and departure date booked at the time of purchase.


ONBOARD EXPERIENCE

EXCLUSIONS

Accommodation is not included in the ticket-only fare. Meals and beverages are not included unless purchased onboard. Transfers, sightseeing add-ons, and any additional travel arrangements are also not included unless otherwise stated.

  • Can I book just part of the journey?

    Yes. You do not need to travel the full route. One-way and return fares are available across selected stations, so you can choose the part of The Mainlander journey that suits your plans.

  • Which stations can I travel from?

    Weekend Train Journeys are available across selected stations including Christchurch, Rolleston, Ashburton, Timaru, Oamaru, Dunedin, Gore and Invercargill. When booking, simply choose your departure and arrival points.

  • Do I have to book a return trip?

    No. You can choose either a one-way or return fare, depending on how you would like to travel.

  • Is accommodation included in this option?

    No. This page is for rail-only fares. If you are looking for a more packaged southern getaway, Train + Accommodation options are available separately.

  • What is the weekend schedule?

    The Summer Series operates across selected long weekends. Southbound services run on Friday, the Dunedin to Invercargill return journey runs on Sunday, and northbound services return on Monday.

  • What is the journey like onboard?

    The Mainlander is designed to be a relaxed and scenic way to travel. From Canterbury through Otago and down to Southland, the journey is all about settling in, taking in the landscape, and enjoying the experience of travelling by rail.

  • Are food and drinks included?

    Meals are not included in the ticket-only fare. Food and beverages can be purchased onboard where available.
